That's because it was directed by Stanley Kubrick, who tells the story of the title character (played with aloof detachment by Ryan O'Neal) with an innate sense of irony as we track his journey from farm boy to soldier to aristocrat. This odyssey of an average man who just keeps failing upward and his subsequent fall from grace may seem like your standard period piece, but, despite its predictably lavish visuals, Barry Lyndon is far from it.
